Why aren't NHS dentists in Northern Ireland accepting new patients?

Most NI NHS practices are not currently accepting new patients because of structural funding pressures in the Health Service contract — not because of dentist supply. On a like-for-like headcount basis, NI has 63 dentists per 100,000 people (1,206 unique HS-registered dentists, BSO FPS Annual Statistics 2024/25) — the lowest of the four UK nations, behind Scotland (~70.4), England (70.1), and Wales (64.8). A separate BSO figure of 1,475 reflects dentist-practice listings (some dentists work at multiple practices, counted at each location), so the headcount figure of 1,206 is the headline workforce-density number. The bottleneck is that the NHS payment system pays practices less than private work and discourages them from taking on new NHS registrations. The Department of Health NI announced an £8m funding package in April 2026 to begin addressing this, including 36 new Dental Foundation Training places for 2026/27. In our April 2026 phone survey of 325 practices, only 2 confirmed they were currently accepting new NHS patients (North Street Dental Care, Lurgan and Cathedral Quarter Dental, Newry — both Southern Trust). As of May 2026, five additional practices have self-confirmed via the directory's self-service dashboard — Bridge Dental (Belfast BT5), Cavehill Dental (Belfast BT15), Comber Dental (BT23), Hamilton Road Dental (Bangor BT20), and Bupa Dental Care Lisburn (BT28) — bringing the live directory total to seven currently-accepting practices spread across Belfast, South Eastern, and Southern Trusts.

The Dental Access Scheme (DAS) is an NI-specific service for unregistered patients who need urgent NHS dental treatment. DAS does not replace registration — once your urgent course of treatment finishes, you still need to register with a practice for ongoing care. Both self-confirmed via the directory's self-service dashboard in May 2026. Patients in Belfast looking for an NHS dentist can: (1) contact Bridge Dental or Cavehill Dental directly to register; (2) search other practices by BT postcode and call to check current availability — acceptance status changes frequently; (3) consider practices in neighbouring South Eastern Trust (Comber BT23, Hamilton Road in Bangor BT20, Bupa Dental Care Lisburn BT28) and Southern Trust (Lurgan BT67, Newry BT34) which also have confirmed currently-accepting practices; (4) use the Dental Access Scheme (DAS) for urgent treatment.
