April 2026 phone survey — Southern Trust is the standout
Of 325 NI general practices we phoned in April 2026, only 2 confirmed actively accepting new NHS patients — and both are in Southern Trust:
- North Street Dental Care, Lurgan (BT67 9AH) — also a Dental Access Scheme (DAS) participant
- Cathedral Quarter Dental, Newry (BT34 1AY)
Belfast, Northern, South Eastern, and Western Trusts each had zero practices confirm active acceptance during the same survey window. About Dentistry in Southern Trust
Southern Health and Social Care Trust (Southern HSCT) serves a population of approximately 396,100 across Armagh and South Down. With 62 general NHS practices, Southern Trust provides comprehensive coverage across both urban centres and rural villages. Newry is the regional hub with 16 practices, while Craigavon (including Lurgan and Portadown) offers additional capacity.
Access to Dental Care: Southern Trust has good geographic distribution of dental practices. Newry's large practice cluster makes it an excellent resource for south Down residents, while Craigavon and Armagh serve the central and western parts of the trust. Smaller towns like Banbridge and Dungannon have several practices each. The Dental Access Scheme ensures emergency care is available across all areas, regardless of practice availability.
Key Points: Newry is the largest dental hub in Southern Trust with exceptional choice (16 practices). Craigavon (covering Lurgan and Portadown) offers additional capacity for residents in the Armagh area. Patients in smaller towns and villages should search by postcode to find the nearest practices. Several practices serve broad catchment areas and welcome patients from surrounding communities. Use our search tool to find the practice that best suits your location and needs.
